This lamp generates electricity through an electrochemical reaction

Submerging two different metal electrodes (e.g., copper, zinc or aluminium) in saltwater creates a current that powers the LED. It’s a practical concept for emergencies, though the electrodes will eventually corrode and require replacement.

This principle is similar to ancient batteries or a car battery’s basic function.
